The Main Library is located on the second floor of the Beckman Center, home of the San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, and adjadent to the San Diego Zoo's Safari Park. It houses the majority of the Zoo's 12,000+ books, and 400+ print journal titles, as well as the Archives and Rare Book Room. Many more journal subscriptions and information resources are available online through the Library's website, Several small, specialized print collections are also located at various sites throughout our multi-campus organization.

Services & Facilities

We are happy to help San Diego Zoo Global staff with research projects and reference questions. We teach individuals and groups how to access and use our collections and website. Staff and volunteers are welcome to browse the collections and use our facilities during open hours. We offer a reading/study area, four networked computers, a slide scanner, two black-and-white printers, and a photocopier/scanner.

Our mission: The primary mission of the SDZG Library is to provide outstanding information resources and services to advance knowledge in animal care and conservation, inspire passion for nature, ignite personal responsibility, and strengthen our organization’s capacity to save species worldwide.

Our vision: We will empower San Diego Zoo Global to lead the fight against extinction by serving as the organization’s information hub and facilitating research of the highest quality.

Archives and Rare Book Room

Our mission: The Archives collects, organizes, preserves, and makes accessible the documentary heritage of our organization, providing historical context through which the record of San Diego Zoo Global’s commitment to saving species worldwide may be interpreted and preserved.

Our vision: We will preserve the legacy of San Diego Zoo Global’s lead role in the fight against extinction by documenting the distinctive stories that embody our organization’s rich history.
